Los Angeles, CA—Sam Lee Gallery is delighted to announce Southland by Los Angeles-based artist Alia Malley. The show opens Saturday, May 22 and continues through Saturday, July 3, 2010; the gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, May 22, from 6 to 9 p.m.
A selection of 7 color photographs from Alia Malley’s Southland series will be on display in her first solo exhibition with the gallery. The artist’s images, photographed on a 4-by-5 in. view camera and printed by the archival pigment process, range from 20-by-24 inches to 44-by-53 inches in size.
Southland represents Malley’s continued investigation of photography’s role in relation to its documentation of the environment. The artist frequently traverses along the streets and highways of greater Los Angeles, seeking pockets of unchecked terrain that often reside unnoticed or completely ignored. In fallow sites such as an abandoned inner-city rail line or the grounds of a shuttered fraternity house, for example, Malley attempts to forge a bridge between capturing the sense of place and also its beauty and loss within the environ. Her images exist in the space between the pastoral and the entropic.

Malley, born 1973 in La Jolla, currently works and lives in Los Angeles. In 2010, she received her MFA from University of California, Riverside; in 1994, Malley earned her BA in critical studies in the School of Cinematic Arts at University of Southern California. Malley’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout the country. Southland was recently on display at the Darmstädter Tage Der Fotografie, Germany, where Malley also received the 2010 Merck Award.
