Unknown Quantities
May 17, 2008 – July 12, 2008
Reception for the Artists: Saturday, May 17, 6 – 9 pm
Los Angeles, CA—Sam Lee Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled Unknown Quantities by Japan-born, Los Angeles-based artist Misato Suzuki. The show opens May 17 and closes July 12, 2008; the gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, May 17, 6 to 9 p.m.
Unknown Quantities, which marks Misato Suzuki's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, consists of 7 mixed media paintings that depict a world that oscillates between the representational and the abstract. Often drawing inspiration from her own life experiences, Suzuki creates within each canvas a repetition of lines and unrecognizable shapes that reveal an atmosphere of clusters and abundance, giving off an impression of complexity and expansion.
In The Telegraph Cables Hum (2008), meticulous strands of DNA-like or microtubules structures repeat and multiply amidst an expansive and coffee-stained field. Seen from away, these scientific networks recall detailed, cell amebas viewed through a microscope. In Transistor (2008), a 5-by-6 feet painting, large egg-like shapes collide with telephone-like cables; the inorganic coexist with the organic in a sea of ochre and tan colors. In each painting, Suzuki metaphorically references the feelings of existing in Tokyo where space is limited and often occupied by a myriad of contrapuntal sounds, lights and people.
Suzuki, born 1975 in Japan, currently works and lives in Los Angeles. In 2002, she received her master’s degree in fine art from Claremont Graduate University, California; in 1999, Suzuki earned her bachelor’s degree in fine art from Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Washington. Suzuki’s work has been included in numerous group exhibitions in Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United States.
