Artist Statement - for the walking purpose
for the walking purpose is a selection of drawings from a four-month trip through England, France, Holland and Germany (made during the latter part of 2009) and since I have returned to California in December. Unique to these new drawings is the utilization of handmade watercolors that I learned to make while in England and incorporate different pigments that I gathered or was given during my travels and since I have returned.
As I have continued to make these small drawings they have developed from quick and informal endeavors to increasingly formal and complex works. Made on small pieces of thick paper that I tear into pocket-sized rectangles these drawings incorporate elements of my daily life and travels including: patterns, obsessive-compulsive mark making, misremembered recollections, hallucinations, visions, encounters with sex, art and religion, people with animal heads, absurd glorifications of mundane interactions, and illustrated attempts at dancing and singing.
